Primary Fallout: Akpabio Hints at Senate Intervention for Affected Lawmakers

Amid growing discontent over the outcome of recent party primaries, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has hinted at efforts by the Senate leadership to address the concerns of affected lawmakers.

Akpabio made the remark on Tuesday while welcoming senators back from the three-week recess and Eid-el-Kabir break.

Congratulating political parties and candidates who emerged from the primaries, he acknowledged that the process often comes with mixed outcomes.

“I know that there will always be victories and disappointments”, he said.

The Senate President, however, suggested that efforts were ongoing to minimise setbacks for serving senators.

“And in this senate, we are promised that we will have very few disappointments. And I do know that the senate leader and the leadership of the senate is working very hard towards that”, Akpabio added.

His comments come amid concerns among lawmakers who either lost party tickets or are involved in disputes following the primaries. Fourteen serving senators reportedly lost during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries across several states.

Akpabio did not provide details of the measures being considered but jokingly advised senators against defecting to other political parties.

Despite the political tensions, he described the developments as part of the democratic process, noting that while some aspirants succeeded and others faced setbacks, democracy remained the ultimate winner.
