CAN Expresses Concern over Conviction of Christian Woman in Borno, Appeals for Rights Protection

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has expressed deep concern over the reported conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman, identified as Lami Samuel Dawa, in Borno State.

In a statement signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association noted that the case reportedly stems from circumstances surrounding the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity, though exact legal details are still being verified.

Confirming that an appeal has been formally lodged, CAN emphasized its commitment to allowing the judicial process to proceed, while asserting that the situation raises critical questions regarding constitutional guarantees of religious freedom.

Reaffirming that every citizen possesses the fundamental right to choose or change their faith without coercion or unlawful punishment, the apex Christian body called on relevant authorities to ensure strict adherence to constitutional protections.

CAN assured that it will closely monitor the legal proceedings and engage state actors to uphold peaceful coexistence and fundamental rights.
