Reaffirming the commission’s commitment to the statutory schedule, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has dismissed speculation surrounding a potential postponement of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to electoral officials in Port Harcourt during a South-South readiness assessment, Amupitan declared that the electoral timetable is locked and non-negotiable.
With the South-South region accounting for nearly sixteen million registered voters, he highlighted Rivers State as a critical operational focus due to its leading voter strength of over 3.7 million.
He disclosed that over five thousand claims and objections regarding the voters’ register are currently being resolved, with the final register scheduled for public release on December 15.
To ensure a smooth exercise, Amupitan assured that security agencies are fully engaged to protect voters and poll workers across all polling units.
He further rejected concerns over digital interference, emphasizing that the election’s outcome will be determined strictly by Nigerian voters rather than artificial intelligence or algorithms, while issuing a stern warning that any electoral staff attempting to compromise the process will face full legal prosecution.
