The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to embark on another nationwide strike if the Federal Government and state governments fail to fully implement the December 2025 agreement reached with the union.
ASUU President, Chris Piwuna, said the union is increasingly frustrated by what it described as delays and inadequate action by authorities on the implementation of the agreement, which followed more than eight months of negotiations and industrial pressure.
The union acknowledged the payment of four of the seven-and-a-half months of withheld salaries owed to its members from the previous administration, but said the outstanding three-and-a-half months continue to place lecturers under severe financial pressure.
ASUU also raised concerns over unremitted third-party deductions, what it described as violations of university laws and institutional autonomy, as well as the declining quality and working conditions of academics in Nigerian universities.
However, the union commended governors who, in their capacity as Visitors to state-owned universities, have taken steps towards implementing the 2025 agreement.
It particularly acknowledged Abia State Governor Alex Otti for what it described as a positive approach, while also commending Bauchi, Ekiti, Ogun, Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Kebbi, Katsina and Borno states for beginning implementation of the agreement.
The union urged the remaining state governments and the Federal Government to implement all outstanding provisions of the agreement without further delay.
ASUU warned that continued failure to address its demands could trigger a fresh nationwide industrial action, saying the responsibility for any disruption to academic activities would rest with the authorities if the outstanding issues remain unresolved.
The union maintained that it is prepared to take further action within the shortest possible time if meaningful progress is not made on the implementation of the agreement.
