Thousands of people took to the streets of Niger’s capital, Niamey, on Wednesday to express support for junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani, days after security forces foiled an attempted military mutiny.
The demonstration followed intense clashes at several strategic locations in the capital over the weekend, as forces loyal to the military government, reportedly assisted by Russian mercenaries, moved to suppress the uprising. Tiani, who seized power in the 2023 coup, has not made a public appearance or issued a statement since the incident.
The rally at Place de la Concertation drew junta supporters, government ministers and other residents, with Russian flags seen among the crowd.
Similar demonstrations were reportedly planned in other major cities, reflecting the military government’s continued support for closer ties with Moscow.
The latest unrest comes amid Niger’s growing security cooperation with Russia following its break with France, the country’s former colonial power.
Niger, along with neighbouring Burkina Faso and Mali, has strengthened ties with Russia while relying on its Africa Corps in the fight against persistent jihadist violence across the Sahel.
Junta officials have blamed foreign interests for the attempted mutiny, with state television previously alleging French involvement. The government has consistently portrayed its military takeover as part of a broader effort to restore national sovereignty and reduce Western influence.
