FIFA and CAF officials have opened consultations with Nigerian football stakeholders as they seek a way out of the leadership crisis affecting the Nigeria Football Federation.
The delegation met with National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko and members of the NFF Congress on Monday at the Abuja Continental Hotel.
The engagement follows the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and several board members on August 27, leaving the federation without clear leadership.
The delegation comprises FIFA Member Association Governance Services team lead Ahmed Harraz, FIFA Head of Member Association Governance Rolf Tanner, FIFA Regional Office for West Africa lead El Hadj Wack Diop and CAF Legal Manager Nnaemeka Olu.
Discussions are focused on the circumstances surrounding the mass resignations, possible amendments to the NFF statutes, the federation’s governance structure and arrangements for its next election.
The officials are also reviewing the composition of the NFF Congress, the electoral process and whether a new date should be fixed for the elective congress.
FIFA and CAF said the assessment is aimed at finding a legally acceptable solution for restoring a functional NFF Congress and resolving recurring leadership disputes.
FIFA had earlier said it had yet to reach a final decision on the crisis, despite receiving submissions from various stakeholders, noting that the ongoing assessment would precede any recommendations to its decision-making bodies.
The consultations are expected to shape the next steps for Nigerian football, including potential governance reforms and the process of restoring stability to the NFF.
