Carrick says Rashford substitution was precautionary

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick says Marcus Rashford was withdrawn in Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Everton after reporting discomfort.

Rashford started at Hill Dickinson Stadium and was taken off in the 70th minute following an impressive display in attack.

Carrick described the substitution as a precaution and praised the England international for his recent performances since returning to the team.

“He’s done very well. I thought he looked really sharp again today and dangerous,” Carrick said, adding that Rashford created several chances and remained a constant threat.

United twice moved in front through Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško, but Everton responded on both occasions as Tyrique George and Ainsley Maitland-Niles restored parity.

Maitland-Niles’ late equaliser denied United victory, leaving Carrick disappointed after his side had looked set to claim all three points.

“It feels like a defeat,” Carrick admitted, while acknowledging that United had at least taken a point.

The draw also highlighted United’s defensive shortcomings, with the team conceding twice in three matches this season. Carrick will now seek defensive improvements while building on the attacking progress shown against Everton.
