Amy Okonkwo Makes Second Appearance for Connecticut Sun in Win Over Liberty

D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo made her second consecutive appearance for the Connecticut Sun in their 94-86 scrimmage win over the New York Liberty, as the team continues preparations for the upcoming WNBA regular season, set to tip off later this month.

The two-time FIBA Women’s AfroBasket champion, who recently joined the Connecticut Sun, previously played for Bourges in France’s Ligue Féminine de Basketball. While at Bourges, she averaged 13.8 points, five rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game, shooting an impressive 48% from the field.

The 28-year-old forward came off the bench in the scrimmage and contributed four points, four rebounds, and one steal, though she did not record an assist. She had a stronger showing in her debut with the Sun last week, scoring 10 points with four rebounds and one assist in a 79-59 loss to the Seattle Storm.

Veteran forward Tina Charles led the way for Connecticut in the latest outing, scoring a game-high 17 points, along with six rebounds and three assists. Jacy Sheldon added 16 points, Olivia Nelson-Ododa chipped in with 15, and Marina Mabrey scored 13 to help secure the victory.

As the WNBA regular season begins on May 17, Okonkwo will aim to solidify her role within the team and deliver impactful performances. Her form will also be key for Nigeria’s D’Tigress as they prepare for the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament, scheduled to take place this summer in Côte d’Ivoire.
