INEC rules out voter revalidation before 2027 election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), says it cannot conduct a voter revalidation exercise before the 2027 general election due to time constraints.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, disclosed this in Abuja while receiving the Country Representative of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Moritz Sprenker, on a courtesy visit.

Amupitan said many voters, particularly elderly persons who registered as far back as 2011, would require validation of their records.

However, he explained that the exercise could not be completed before the 2027 polls and would have to be undertaken after the election.

The INEC chairman also highlighted areas for continued collaboration with KAS, including civic education, electoral technology, institutional capacity building, combating misinformation and promoting inclusion in the electoral process.

Responding, Sprenker reaffirmed KAS’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with INEC, noting that the foundation had supported democratic development and electoral capacity building in Nigeria for more than 25 years.
