NAF Plane Crash: Ondo Communities Petition Tinubu, Demand Clean-Up, Compensation

Fears over possible water contamination and threats to local livelihoods have prompted communities in Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, to petition President Bola Tinubu following the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in the area on October 5.

The communities are seeking an independent environmental assessment, urgent public health measures and compensation for verified losses arising from the incident.

The petition, signed by the Olu of Igbokoda, Afolabi Odidiomo, on behalf of the affected communities, was submitted through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The Chief of Air Staff, ministers of Defence and Environment, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, the National Emergency Management Agency and the Ondo State Governor were also copied.

The petition comes amid concerns about the impact of the crash on surrounding waters, as search and recovery operations continue following the deaths of 25 people on board the aircraft.

It also follows a directive by the Ondo State Government for the Ministries of Environment and Health to fumigate affected water sources and provide clean water to residents as precautionary measures against suspected contamination.

The communities said their appeal was intended to protect residents and the environment, not to prejudge ongoing investigations or assign responsibility for the crash.

They expressed concern that aviation fuel, lubricants or other hazardous substances could have leaked from the submerged wreckage into surrounding waters, potentially affecting aquatic life, fishing grounds and residents who depend on the waterways for their livelihoods.

They called for an independent environmental assessment, including laboratory analysis of water and sediment samples, examination of aquatic life and identification of any continuing source of contamination.

The petitioners also requested that the findings be made available to the affected communities, alongside clear guidance on whether the waters are safe for fishing, domestic use and other activities.

On public health, they urged the relevant agencies to assess potential risks, provide medical examinations and treatment for residents suspected of exposure, and establish a channel for reporting health concerns.

They further called for an update on the recovery of the aircraft wreckage and any outstanding human remains, stressing the need for urgent and respectful handling of the victims.

The communities also requested an assessment of the economic impact of the crash, including disruptions to fishing activities, loss of income, damage to equipment and other verified losses.

They urged the Federal Government to establish a fair and accessible compensation process and implement clean-up and restoration measures if contamination is confirmed.

The petitioners asked the government to appoint a liaison officer to coordinate communication with Igbokoda and neighbouring communities, ensure cooperation among relevant agencies and provide regular updates on the response.

They requested a substantive written response within 30 days, detailing measures already taken, agencies responsible for outstanding actions and timelines for addressing immediate risks and other concerns.
