The Kano State Fire Service has identified a battery explosion as the cause of the devastating fire that engulfed the popular GSM market in the state.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the Fire Service detailed that the blaze originated on the ground floor of a one-storey building, quickly spreading to the upper level.
“The fire consumed 20 permanent shops and 13 temporary stalls on the ground floor before advancing to the upper floor, where it destroyed an additional 13 shops and one temporary stall,” the statement read.
A total of 47 shops were affected in the incident, which sparked concern among traders and residents.
Thanks to the swift response and tireless efforts of the Fire Service personnel, the fire was contained, preventing further destruction.
Importantly, the statement confirmed that no casualties or injuries were reported during the incident.
The Fire Service has issued a cautionary appeal to shop owners and the public, urging vigilance when handling batteries and electrical devices to prevent similar disasters in the future.
