With a symbolic tour of America’s founding documents, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President, Xi Jinping, brought Xi’s Washington visit to a close, as both leaders pointed to progress in managing ties between the rival powers.
At the National Archives, Trump showed Xi the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, highlighting America’s 250-year history.
Trump also confirmed that Iran’s war was discussed during their talks, amid reports of Chinese support for Tehran.
Asked about prospects for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said, “I think we’re going to do great”.
Xi described the discussions as adding “new substance” to their relationship, while Trump called the meetings “very positive”.
Despite the cordial exchanges, the summit produced limited concrete outcomes, with the main announcements focusing on an extension of the U.S.-China trade truce and plans for two pandas to arrive at a US zoo.
Xi is expected to meet Trump again later this year at the APEC summit in China and the G20 summit in Miami.
