Questions over Imran Khan’s treatment in prison have intensified after his family and political party accused Pakistani authorities of violating a court order on his medical care.
The government has rejected the allegations, insisting Khan is receiving adequate medical attention and remains in good health. Khan’s sister, Uzma Khan, said he told her he had been kept in solitary confinement when she met him at a government hospital in Islamabad.
A senior official of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party also accused authorities of ignoring a Supreme Court directive that he be examined at Shifa International Hospital. Khan’s personal physician, Dr. Faisal Sultan, said he went to the private hospital but was later informed that Khan had been returned to Adiala prison.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said doctors examined Khan and found him medically fit before he was taken back to prison.
The Information Ministry denied claims that Khan was being isolated from his family, saying he had received more than 900 visits from relatives, lawyers, doctors and political representatives since 2023. It also rejected medical neglect allegations, saying Khan had undergone about 30 examinations by specialists and medical boards from several hospitals.
Authorities said security concerns prompted the decision to take him to the public hospital after PTI supporters gathered around the private facility. The Supreme Court had ordered that Khan be examined at Shifa by a medical board that included specialists and one of his personal doctors.
Khan has remained imprisoned since 2023 following convictions in several cases, after his removal from office through a parliamentary no-confidence vote in 2022.
