Tension has gripped Delta State as workers shut down the state secretariat in Asaba following the death of a deputy director in the Ministry of Secondary Education, Mr Unity Adedah.
The development prompted the Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress to declare an indefinite strike, with the union demanding accountability over the circumstances surrounding the civil servant’s death.
NLC Chairman in the state, Goodluck Oforbruku, announced the industrial action on Friday while addressing protesting workers at the Chike Edozien Secretariat in Asaba.
The workers had earlier taken over the secretariat complex, effectively halting official activities in protest against the death of Adedah.
Reports surrounding the incident allege that the deputy director was restrained and severely assaulted by individuals described as thugs, allegedly acting on the orders of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr Kingsley Ashibogwu.
The allegations have intensified concerns among workers and labour leaders, who are seeking clarity on what led to Adedah’s death and whether anyone should be held responsible.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the death remain a subject of contention, with calls growing for a thorough investigation to establish what happened and determine responsibility.
