A coordinated national strategy to tackle conflict and strengthen peacebuilding efforts is being developed by the Nigerian Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The proposed National Peace Framework is expected to improve social cohesion, strengthen community resilience and provide a more coordinated response to Nigeria’s security challenges.
Speaking at the launch of the framework development initiative, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement for the North-Central, Dr Abiodun Essiet, said lasting peace requires more than security operations.
She stressed the need to address the social and governance issues that contribute to conflict, while strengthening community engagement and early warning and response systems.
Essiet also called for the involvement of traditional and religious leaders, civil society organisations, women, youths and the private sector in the peacebuilding process.
She said the framework would provide a practical and inclusive approach to conflict prevention and help strengthen national stability when completed and implemented.
