EU Releases €2.3m To Support Cholera Response In Africa

Nigeria is set to receive €1.5 million from the European Union as part of a €2.3 million emergency humanitarian package to help contain cholera outbreaks in West and Central Africa.
The funding will strengthen Nigeria’s outbreak response, surveillance and case management, while supporting the provision of cholera supplies and water, sanitation and hygiene services in affected communities. The EU announced the intervention in a statement signed by its Press and Information Officer in Nigeria and ECOWAS, Modestus Chukwulaka.
The World Health Organisation reported 61,888 cholera cases and 1,230 deaths across 16 African countries between January and May 2026. Nigeria accounted for 6,860 cases and 80 deaths during the period. Borno State recorded the highest number of cases in Nigeria, with 5,267 cases and 49 deaths across 10 local government areas as of the end of May.
The EU said the Nigerian allocation would support additional response teams, cholera kits, water treatment, surveillance in hard-to-reach areas and community sensitisation. EU Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, said the funding would help humanitarian partners respond quickly and protect vulnerable communities.
“Cholera is preventable and treatable. Yet it still threatens lives when people lack something as basic as safe water and healthcare”, Lahbib said.
She added that the emergency funding would help partners “contain the outbreaks and protect the communities most at risk”.
