Switzerland striker Breel Embolo has been excluded from the squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures following sanctions over his use of forged Covid-19 test certificates during the pandemic.
He becomes the second Swiss player to be omitted this week, after captain Granit Xhaka was dropped following his admission that he used a fake certificate to avoid mandatory vaccination.
The Swiss football association announced Embolo’s omission on Friday without giving a reason, but Swiss media linked the decision to a fine issued in November 2025 over his use of fraudulent certificates.
The sanction against the Atlanta United forward was recently reported by Swiss outlet Schweiz Heute.
Speaking to St. Galler Tagblatt, the former Monaco and Rennes player said he had “understood that (his) behaviour was not correct” and “accepted (his) responsibility”.
Xhaka admitted his wrongdoing on Monday.
