Atiku, NDC Question Sustainability of FG’s 30-Day Petrol Discount

Questions continue to trail the Federal Government’s proposed 30-day petrol discount, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) expressing doubts about its ability to ease the economic hardship confronting millions of Nigerians.

Both have warned that the initiative could offer only temporary relief, leaving citizens to contend with high fuel costs, transport fares and food prices once the discount expires.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announced the initiative on Thursday, explaining that the government would sell petrol at cost through Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) stations for an initial 30 days, with public transport operators given priority.

However, concerns remain over the actual savings motorists and commuters stand to gain, particularly whether the discount will translate into lower transport fares and reduced living costs.

Reacting to the announcement, Atiku, through a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication at the African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council, described the intervention as temporary and politically motivated.

He argued that the measure does little to address the underlying economic pressures facing Nigerians, warning that the hardship could return once the 30-day window closes.

The former vice president also renewed his call for a more sustainable support framework tied to locally refined petrol, with safeguards to protect consumers and strengthen domestic refining.

Similarly, the NDC, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, faulted the initiative, describing it as inadequate to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal.

The party also questioned whether NNPC retail outlets could adequately meet nationwide demand without causing overcrowding and further inconvenience.

With the cost of living continuing to weigh on households, the debate over the discount centres on whether it can deliver meaningful relief or simply provide a brief respite, while the need for lasting measures to ease economic pressure remains unresolved.
