Yul Edochie Urges President Tinubu to Release IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu
Actor joins growing voices calling for political resolution in ongoing trial of separatist leader
Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has publicly appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Edochie described his appeal as a humble request to the president, whom he referred to respectfully by his official title. “To my dear President… I humbly appeal to you to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,” he wrote.
Kanu, who is currently facing trial on seven counts of terrorism and treason, was re-arrested in Kenya in 2021 and returned to Nigeria under what his legal team has described as an “extraordinary rendition.”
His continued detention has sparked widespread calls for a political solution. On Thursday, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, confirmed that discreet diplomatic engagements are ongoing between Igbo elders and President Tinubu aimed at securing Kanu’s release.
Edochie’s appeal adds to a growing list of public figures and stakeholders pushing for a resolution through dialogue rather than continued prosecution.
