Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has secured the suspension of a 50-day strike by resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, following commitments to address their demands.
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) announced the decision after an emergency general meeting on Friday, agreeing to suspend the industrial action for eight weeks to allow the state government to implement agreements reached with the doctors.
In a statement, ARD President, Dr. Adedapo Mustapha, directed members to resume full clinical duties on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Mustapha commended Makinde for personally intervening in the dispute and chairing a stakeholders’ meeting at the hospital’s Gangway Hall on October 15.
The meeting brought together government officials, hospital management, state lawmakers and health sector unions to address the doctors’ demands.
The key issues include implementation of the Medical Residency Training Act (MRTA), payment of 2025 minimum wage arrears and implementation of the Revised Professional Allowance Table (PAT).
According to Mustapha, Makinde approved payment of the minimum wage arrears on or before mid-November 2026.
The governor also directed the formation of a committee comprising representatives of the doctors’ association, other health sector unions, the Ministry of Health and his office to develop modalities for implementing the revised professional allowance table within six weeks.
On the residency training legislation, the governor pledged to ensure the MRTA Bill is passed by the Oyo State House of Assembly by October 28, 2026, and assented to within the first week of November.
Mustapha said the association decided to suspend the strike after reviewing the government’s commitments at its emergency meeting on October 16.
He expressed optimism that the agreed timelines would be met, reaffirming the doctors’ commitment to constructive engagement and quality healthcare delivery.
