Tinubu Demands Two Permanent UN Security Council Seats for Africa at TICAD9

President Bola Tinubu has renewed the call for sweeping reforms at the United Nations, insisting that Africa deserves a permanent voice and full representation on the Security Council.

Speaking at the plenary session on peace and stability during the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, the President stressed that Africa’s demand for equity is long overdue.

Tinubu declared that the continent deserves two permanent seats with all privileges, including the right of veto, as well as additional non-permanent seats in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.

“Africa’s quest for fair and equitable representation in the UN Security Council is not just a plea; it is a just and fair demand,” the President said.
“Indeed, Africa deserves two seats in the permanent category with all its prerogatives, and additional seats in the non-permanent category.”

Beyond global reforms, Tinubu also used the platform to commend the Nigerian Armed Forces for their recent successes against insurgency and criminality, describing their gains as a “springboard for national development and stability.”

But he warned that military victories alone cannot guarantee sustainable peace without tackling the deeper issues of poverty, inequality, and exclusion.

Tinubu urged world leaders to adopt fresh approaches to peace-building in Africa, citing recent peace agreements in the Congo as evidence that mediation, when paired with targeted economic investment, can deliver long-term stability.
