Shorunmu says intense emotional trauma while filming Apase led to irreversible vocal cord damage and changed her signature sound
Popular Nollywood actress and producer Azeezat Shorunmu has shared the emotional and painful story behind the permanent loss of her original voice, which occurred on a movie set during a time of intense distress.
Speaking during a recent interview with Oyinmomo TV, Shorunmu revealed that the incident happened while filming Apase. On the morning production was set to begin, she received news that fellow actress Mummy Surutu had lost her child. The shock and confusion triggered a powerful emotional outburst that led to her screaming uncontrollably, a moment that would irreversibly damage her vocal cords.
“Everyone knows this is not my real voice,” Shorunmu said, explaining how what began as a temporary blockage evolved into a long-term condition. After months without improvement, she sought medical and spiritual remedies, including the use of anointing oil. Despite her efforts, her voice never returned to its original form.
“My voice became tiny and cracked,” she said, describing how the condition eventually shaped her public image. What was once a cause for anguish is now a defining feature of her presence on screen, a reminder of both personal loss and professional resilience.
