Tensions between Iran and the United States are escalating again after a deadly strike on a wedding ceremony in southern Iran triggered a vow of retaliation from the head of the country’s Revolutionary Guards.
Revolutionary Guards chief Ahmad Vahidi said Thursday that the deaths of four people, including a child, would not go unanswered and vowed to avenge the victims.
The strike occurred Tuesday night in the coastal town of Kuhestak, along the Strait of Hormuz, following the United States’ announcement of attacks on targets linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Iranian authorities said 68 others were wounded in the attack, which officials condemned as a “war crime.”
The United States has not directly addressed the reported strike, but a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command said the American military “never targets civilians.”
Iran has been at war since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched a surprise bombing campaign that killed the country’s supreme leader.
An April ceasefire ended the initial phase of intense bombardment, but sporadic exchanges of fire have continued, particularly in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
