Ibom Air Bans Passenger for Brutal Assault on Flight Crew, Joining a Growing List of Aviation Incidents in Nigeria

In a striking move to uphold safety and professionalism, Nigerian domestic airline Ibom Air has indefinitely barred Comfort Emmanson from all future flights after she violently attacked crew members on the Uyo–Lagos route last Sunday.

According to an official statement released Monday, Emmanson’s aggressive behavior culminated in a physical assault on the Purser and other cabin crew members at Lagos airport.

The airline stressed that such conduct is utterly unacceptable and has taken firm action to prevent her from ever flying with them again.

The incident reportedly began shortly before takeoff in Uyo when Emmanson refused to comply with the pilot’s order to switch off her mobile phone.

Despite warnings, she continued to defy instructions until a fellow passenger intervened and powered down the device. This sparked a verbal confrontation that subsided only after the plane departed.

However, the situation escalated upon arrival in Lagos. After other passengers disembarked, Emmanson approached the unsuspecting Purser, forcibly tore off her wig, removed her glasses, and physically assaulted her with slaps and blows. When another crew member intervened, she also became a target of Emmanson’s violent outburst.

The passenger even attempted to seize a fire extinguisher as a weapon—an act that could have jeopardized the aircraft’s safety.

Security personnel from Ibom Air and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) quickly intervened, but Emmanson continued her aggressive attacks, requiring forceful removal and subsequent police custody.

The airline has filed a detailed report of the incident with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for further investigation.

This episode follows closely on the heels of a similar high-profile incident involving Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde, aka K1 De Ultimate, who was recently banned for six months by the NCAA after unruly behavior at Abuja airport last week.

These incidents highlight a growing concern over passenger conduct in Nigerian airspace, prompting stricter enforcement of safety regulations by airlines and regulatory bodies alike.

Ibom Air’s decisive response sets a precedent within the domestic aviation industry, reinforcing a zero-tolerance stance against any behavior that threatens the safety and dignity of crew members and passengers.
