Governor Bago Mourns Shiroro Boat Tragedy Victims, Urges Stricter Water Safety Measures

Governor Umaru Bago has expressed heartfelt condolences to the people of Shiroro Local Government Area following a devastating boat accident that claimed several lives and destroyed goods en route to the Zumba community market.

In a condolence statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor described the tragedy as “unfortunate, disheartening, and deeply worrisome,” particularly in light of the frequency of such incidents in Niger’s riverine communities.

Governor Bago lamented that despite ongoing interventions by federal and state agencies — including the Nigerian Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) — boat mishaps remain a recurring nightmare for residents who rely on inland waterways for transport and trade.

“This heartbreaking incident reinforces the urgent need for stricter adherence to water transport safety guidelines,” the governor said. “My administration will not relent in its efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of our riverine communities.”

While reiterating the government’s commitment to implementing comprehensive safety policies through its relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), Governor Bago urged local residents to comply with safety protocols, particularly during the rainy season when river currents become dangerously unpredictable.

The governor also commended the swift response by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), as well as the courageous efforts of local divers and community volunteers who aided in the search and rescue operations.

In a solemn tribute, Governor Bago extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
