The World Health Organisation has urged Nigerians to remain calm following the confirmation of an Ebola case in Abuja, clarifying that a single imported case does not automatically mean the country is experiencing an outbreak.
The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Mohamed Janabi, gave the reassurance in a video message shared on his X account.
Janabi said the organisation was working with the Nigerian government and other partners to investigate the case, trace contacts, conduct laboratory tests and strengthen infection prevention and control measures.
He added that efforts were also underway to protect healthcare workers and communities from possible transmission.
The WHO official urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, stay informed and follow guidance issued by public health authorities.
He warned against fear and the spread of misinformation, stressing that early reporting of suspected cases, public cooperation and access to reliable information were essential to containing the virus.
Meanwhile, Nigerian health authorities have intensified surveillance and contact tracing following the confirmation of the infection, while relevant agencies continue to strengthen preparedness measures to prevent further spread.
