The Federal University of Agriculture in Orogun, Delta State, and the Federal University of Education in Obudu, Cross River State, are a step closer to establishment following the passage of their bills by the Senate.

The bills were passed on Thursday after the adoption of reports from the Senate’s relevant committees.

Presenting the agriculture bill, Senator Anthony Ani, said the proposed university would strengthen agricultural education and promote improved farming practices.

On the education bill, Senator Muntari Dandutse said the institution would expand access to higher education and help address the shortage of qualified teachers.

He added that stakeholders supported the proposal during a public hearing in May 2025, while the university would build on the existing infrastructure and manpower of the Federal College of Education in Obudu.

The Senate subsequently considered the bills clause by clause before passing them after third readings.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, commended the lawmakers and expressed hope that presidential assent would enable the institutions to expand educational opportunities.

He also urged the universities to comply with National Universities Commission standards to ensure their certificates receive international recognition.
