Diphtheria outbreak: Plateau cases climb to 303, deaths rise to 27

A diphtheria outbreak in Plateau State has worsened, with suspected cases rising to 303 and the death toll climbing to 27, from the 23 previously reported.

State Epidemiologist, Dr Maren Damulak, said Jos North has recorded the highest number of cases, with Rikkos among the worst-hit communities. Children account for a significant proportion of those affected.

In response, the state government has intensified surveillance, contact tracing, vaccination and community sensitisation to curb the spread.

It has also ordered the temporary closure of public and private primary and secondary schools from September 7, following suspected cases in four local government areas.

Some suspected patients are receiving treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital and Plateau State Specialist Hospital, where isolation facilities have been provided.

Chairman of Jos North Local Government Council, John Christopher, said additional logistics had been deployed to strengthen surveillance and contact tracing in affected communities.

He urged residents to maintain good hygiene, dispose of waste properly and report symptoms including sore throat, fever, breathing difficulties and neck swelling.

Meanwhile, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has directed the immediate mobilisation of drugs and medical supplies to health facilities treating diphtheria patients.

Health authorities say surveillance and containment measures remain ongoing across the state.
