Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez taken to hospital after collision

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to hospital for precautionary checks after a second-half collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during their Premier League encounter on Saturday.

The incident occurred at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool when Martinez came off his line to intercept a cross and collided with Branthwaite, according to the Associated Press.

Medical personnel from both clubs attended to the players. Branthwaite continued after undergoing a concussion assessment, while Martinez received about 10 minutes of treatment before being stretchered off.

The Associated Press, citing TNT Sports, reported that the goalkeeper was being taken to hospital for further examination.

Mike Penders replaced Martinez, making his Premier League debut for Chelsea.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso provided an update after the match, telling TNT Sports, as reported by The Guardian, that Martinez was conscious when he left the stadium.

“As far as I know he left the stadium conscious … right now he is at the hospital doing precautionary tests … so let’s see … but this is what I know so far,” Alonso said.

The incident also drew boos from some Everton supporters as Martinez was carried off the pitch, according to The Guardian’s live match coverage.

Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory, with Pedro Neto scoring in the 46th and 90th minutes.

The win moved Chelsea above Everton in the Premier League standings at the time of the report.
