Chelsea goalkeeper Martinez taken to hospital after collision with Everton defender

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was taken to hospital for precautionary examinations after a heavy collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Saturday’s Premier League encounter.

The incident occurred in the second half at Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool when Martinez came off his line to intercept a cross and collided with Branthwaite, prompting medical personnel from both teams to intervene.

While Branthwaite continued after undergoing a concussion assessment, Martinez received around 10 minutes of treatment before being stretchered off the pitch.

The Argentine was subsequently taken to hospital, with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirming after the match that the goalkeeper was conscious when he left the stadium.

“As far as I know he left the stadium conscious … right now he is at the hospital doing precautionary tests … so let’s see … but this is what I know so far,” Alonso said.

Mike Penders replaced Martinez, making his Premier League debut for Chelsea. Some Everton supporters reportedly booed as the injured goalkeeper was carried off.

Chelsea won the match 2-0, with Pedro Neto scoring in the 46th and 90th minutes. The victory lifted the Blues above Everton in the Premier League standings.
