U.S. Jury Convicts Nigerian Priest of Sexual Assault

A United States jury has found Nigerian Catholic priest, Anthony Odiong, guilty of multiple sexual assault charges involving two women, following a trial in Texas.

The conviction comes after allegations against the 57-year-old priest sparked investigations into claims of sexual abuse and exploitation.

Reports indicate that prosecutors argued Odiong used his position as a cleric to prey on vulnerable women.

A jury in Waco found him guilty of one count of first-degree sexual assault and two counts of second-degree sexual assault after hearing testimony from the victims during the trial.

Under Texas law, Odiong faces the possibility of life imprisonment on the first-degree charge, while the additional convictions carry prison terms of between two and 20 years each.

Sentencing is scheduled to begin on Monday.

If jailed, Odiong will become the second priest linked to St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Luling, Texas, to be convicted in recent years over sexual assault-related offences.
