The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to hold a Special Convention in Abuja on Saturday to formally affirm former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, confirmed the development, describing the convention as a major step in the party’s preparations for the next presidential race.
Obi emerged as the sole aspirant for the NDC presidential ticket after becoming the only contender to purchase the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms before the deadline.
He was subsequently screened and cleared by the party’s presidential screening committee chaired by former Ebonyi State Governor and ex-Minister of Education, Senator Sam Egwu.
The committee said Obi met all constitutional, Electoral Act and party requirements to contest the presidency and provided satisfactory responses during the screening exercise held in Abuja.
The affirmation convention follows weeks of political realignments within the opposition, with the NDC positioning itself as a key challenger ahead of the 2027 elections.
Party officials say delegates and stakeholders from across the country are expected to attend the convention, where Obi’s candidacy is expected to be formally ratified.
