Trump Suffers Major Midterm Setback as Democrats Take Full Control of Congress

A political earthquake has shaken Washington, with Democrats sweeping to control both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, dealing President Donald Trump and his Republican Party a major setback barely two years into his second term.

The victory gives Democrats control of the House of Representatives and Senate, putting them in a position to frustrate Trump’s legislative agenda, scrutinise his administration and challenge key government appointments for the remainder of his presidency.

The results reflect growing voter dissatisfaction over rising living costs, higher fuel prices, trade tariffs and the administration’s handling of the war with Iran.

Democratic candidates made historic gains in traditionally Republican strongholds, turning states that overwhelmingly backed Trump in 2024 into major battlegrounds.

Despite the scale of the defeat, Trump signalled a willingness to work with the opposition, while also hinting at resistance to Democratic legislative proposals.

The Senate results delivered some of the night’s biggest surprises. Democrats secured victories in Republican-held states, including Kansas, Iowa, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio, breaking longstanding Republican dominance in several of those states.

In Kansas, Methodist minister Adam Hamilton defeated incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall, becoming the first Democrat elected to the state’s Senate seat in nearly a century. Iowa also delivered a major upset, with Democrat Josh Turek defeating Republican Ashley Hinson.

Texas produced another stunning result as Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, while Gina Hinojosa unseated incumbent Governor Greg Abbott, ending decades of Republican control of the state’s top office.

Democrats also held key Senate seats, including Jon Ossoff’s in Georgia, strengthening their position in the upper chamber.

The party’s gains extended to the House of Representatives, where Democrats overturned Republican-held districts across several states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Kentucky, Arizona and North Carolina. Some of the victories came in areas Trump had comfortably won in the 2024 presidential election.

Beyond Congress, Democrats recorded significant victories in state-level elections. In Georgia, former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won the governorship, becoming the first Black woman elected to the position in the United States.

The new congressional majority is expected to intensify scrutiny of Trump’s policies, particularly on immigration, the Iran conflict and allegations of corruption within his administration. Democrats will also have greater influence over judicial appointments and other senior nominations.

House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is now positioned to become Speaker of the House when the new Congress convenes in January, potentially making history as the first Black politician to hold the office.

For Republicans, the outcome represents a major reversal of political fortunes and leaves Trump facing a divided government for the final two years of his presidency.

The results underscore the growing influence of economic concerns on American voters, with the cost of housing, food, utilities and other essentials emerging as major issues that shaped the election.
