Ilera Eko: Over 5,000 residents benefit as Lagos lawmaker expands health insurance scheme

More residents of Eti-Osa Constituency II are set to benefit from subsidised healthcare as Lagos lawmaker, Gbolahan Yishawu, reopens registration for the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme after over 5,000 residents received two years of sponsored coverage.

Yishawu, who represents the constituency in the Lagos State House of Assembly, announced the extension during the distribution of insurance cards on Friday.

He said the initiative, implemented in partnership with the Lagos State Government, was aimed at reducing out-of-pocket medical expenses and ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent residents from accessing healthcare.

“We want to ensure that every one of our residents has the opportunity to get medical care”, he said.

The sponsored Standard Jaara package covers treatment for malaria and typhoid, antenatal care, dental and eye services, as well as selected surgical procedures.

Yishawu said registration had been reopened to accommodate more applicants, adding that the number of beneficiaries could exceed the initial 5,000 target. He encouraged beneficiaries to sustain their coverage after the two-year sponsorship, noting that Ilera Eko offers monthly and quarterly payment options.

Some beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, saying it would reduce their medical expenses and encourage regular health checks.

Yishawu explained that the programme was developed from feedback gathered during town hall meetings and other engagements with residents.

“We do an analysis of the data we receive, based on the things people say at town halls and other engagements. Our programmes meet the needs of our constituents”, he said.

He added that his office was considering further healthcare interventions, including services for ear- and nose-related conditions, following requests from residents.

The lawmaker urged beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity by accessing medical care whenever necessary.
