The Nigeria Police Force has warned politicians, political thugs and their supporters against tearing down or defacing campaign posters, banners and billboards belonging to rival candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning follows reports of increasing incidents of campaign materials being destroyed across some states as political parties intensify preparations for the elections.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Force described the acts as political intolerance and warned those involved to desist or face prosecution.
“The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns this act of political intolerance and warns political thugs, hoodlums and other mischief-makers involved to desist immediately”, the statement said.
The police explained that the unlawful destruction or removal of campaign materials could amount to malicious damage, an offence under Section 451 of the Criminal Code Act and Section 326 of the Penal Code Law.
It stressed that political differences did not justify damaging another candidate’s property or restricting their right to campaign.
The Force added that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, had directed commissioners of police across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to prevent further incidents, investigate reported cases and prosecute offenders.
It also warned that political sponsors and individuals found to have recruited or encouraged the destruction of campaign materials would be held accountable.
“The Nigeria Police Force will not allow political thugs and troublemakers to turn the nation’s political environment into a theatre of lawlessness. Those who choose to break the law will face the full consequences of their actions,” the statement added.
The police urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the rights of opposing groups, warning against actions capable of undermining the democratic process.
