President Bola Tinubu has approved 27 major road projects worth more than ₦3.9 trillion, marking one of the largest infrastructure investments approved by the Federal Government in recent years.

The projects, which cut across 15 states, received approval during Monday’s meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Minister of Works David Umahi said the projects are spread across Adamawa, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Taraba and Yobe states.

Among the biggest approvals is the re-award of the 409-kilometre dual carriageway project in Niger State under the Federal Government’s tax credit scheme. The project, valued at ₦1.8 trillion, was awarded to businessman Aliko Dangote.

The council also approved ₦276 billion for the dualisation of the Ilorin-Ogbomoso Road and ₦265 billion for the reconstruction of the Iseyin-Eruwa-Agbesi Road, which links Oyo and Kwara states.

Other major projects include the ₦217 billion dualisation of the old Ijaye-Federal Government College-Ilorin Road corridor with a spur to Akinmorin, as well as the ₦116 billion reconstruction of the 21-kilometre Abakaliki-Afikpo Road in Ebonyi State.

Additional approvals cover ₦110 billion for the Ogbomoso-Oko-Illupu Road connecting Oyo and Osun states, ₦104 billion for the rehabilitation of Sections One and Two of the Ilorin-Omorin-Ebe-Kabba-Obajana Road across Kwara and Kogi states, and ₦98 billion for the construction of the 30-kilometre Idi-Araba-Ayede-Olodo Road in Oyo State.

FEC also approved ₦92 billion for the rehabilitation of the Baban-Lamba-Sharan Phase Two Road in Plateau State, while ₦86 billion each was earmarked for the reconstruction of the Enugu-Abakaliki Road, including a flyover, and the Adikpo-Ajayi-Tese-Akpa-Otukpo Road linking Benue and Cross River states.

The approvals further include road projects in Adamawa, Taraba, Ekiti, Ondo, Lagos, Yobe and several other states, covering highway rehabilitation, bridge construction, new flyovers and strategic road expansions aimed at improving connectivity and supporting economic activities.

Umahi also announced that the council approved the Full Business Case for the operation and maintenance concession of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. He added that reconstruction of failed sections of the highway around the Ibadan axis would begin using concrete pavement technology to improve durability.

Providing an update on ongoing federal road projects, the minister disclosed that the first 118-kilometre section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Expressway has been completed.

According to him, the completed stretch of the highway is valued at ₦137 billion and forms part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise critical transport infrastructure across the country.
