NiMet Raises Flash Flood Alert for Lagos, Coastal States as Heavy Rainfall Intensifies

Weather agency warns residents to prepare for flooding, strong winds and thunderstorms as widespread rain sweeps across southern Nigeria…..

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh warning to residents of Lagos and several other coastal states, cautioning that persistent rainfall expected on Tuesday could trigger flash flooding in vulnerable communities.

The advisory, contained in NiMet’s Weather Outlook for June 30, 2026, predicts sustained rainfall across much of southern Nigeria, with low-lying and coastal areas facing the highest flood risk as the day progresses.

According to the agency, light morning showers and thunderstorms are expected over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states before rainfall becomes more widespread and intense later in the day.

NiMet said moderate rainfall is likely across the entire southern region during the afternoon and evening, warning that flash flooding could occur in several coastal states, particularly Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

The agency also released forecasts for the northern part of the country, predicting morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall in parts of Borno, Adamawa and Taraba states. As the day progresses, the thunderstorms are expected to spread to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Sokoto, Yobe, Gombe and Kebbi states.

In the North Central region, residents should expect cloudy skies early in the day, with isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall forecast for parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa and Benue. NiMet said rainfall is expected to become more widespread during the afternoon and evening, with moderate thunderstorms affecting several areas across the region.

The agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant as severe weather conditions develop, noting that strong winds could precede thunderstorms.

Motorists were advised to drive cautiously, especially during heavy rainfall and periods of reduced visibility, while residents were warned against walking or driving through floodwaters. NiMet also cautioned people to avoid taking shelter under tall trees during thunderstorms due to the risk of lightning strikes.

For the aviation industry, the agency advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather forecasts to support safe and efficient flight operations.

NiMet said observing these safety precautions could significantly reduce the risks associated with the expected severe weather conditions.
