Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has set a new record for the longest-charting solo song by an African act on the US Billboard Hot 100 with her hit single What You Need.

The song has extended its run on the chart to 30 weeks, moving past the previous record of 29 weeks held by South African singer Tyla’s Water and Nigerian singer CKay’s Love Nwantiti.

What You Need currently sits at number 33 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to the chart update cited in the report.

The achievement further strengthens Tems’ presence in the US music market, where the singer has continued to attract attention through her releases and chart performances.

‘What You Need’ reaches new milestone

Beyond its extended Hot 100 run, What You Need has also topped Billboard’s Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Adult R&B Airplay charts.

The song previously reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking its highest position on the chart.

By reaching 30 weeks, the single has now outlasted Water and Love Nwantiti in terms of time spent on the US singles chart, establishing a new benchmark for solo songs by African acts.

The milestone adds to Tems’ achievements as a Nigerian artist making an impact on the international music scene.
