Cardoso-led initiative targets financial bottlenecks, stronger investment flows as apex bank engages Chinese financial institutions and Nigerian businesses….
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is seeking to strengthen banking relationships between Nigeria and China and improve cross-border payment systems to ease financial transactions and create more opportunities for investment between the two countries.
The initiative was discussed at a business and financial roundtable in Beijing on Wednesday, where Nigerian and Chinese business leaders examined the challenges affecting financial flows between the two economies.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso called for closer financial cooperation, with the discussions focusing on how improved banking connections could support businesses operating in both countries.
The roundtable, themed “Strengthening the Nigeria-China Financial Corridor,” took place at the Pan Pacific Beijing and brought together business leaders to explore ways to improve access to financial services, strengthen banking partnerships and open up investment channels.
A major issue highlighted at the meeting was the need to make cross-border payments more efficient, particularly for businesses involved in trade and investment between Nigeria and China. Stronger relationships between financial institutions were also identified as necessary to facilitate transactions and reduce barriers to financial flows.
The CBN further highlighted the potential benefits of expanding the presence of Nigerian banks in China, a move that could improve access to banking services for businesses and investors operating across the two markets.
Speaking at the event, CBN Deputy Governor for Economic Policy, Philip Ikeazor, delivered the opening remarks, stressing the importance of converting improvements in Nigeria’s macroeconomic fundamentals into increased investment and deeper financial markets.
His remarks underscored the need for stronger financial connections to ensure that economic reforms translate into greater business opportunities and increased investment activity.
Nigeria’s Ambassador to China, Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau, also addressed the gathering, alongside other industry figures, including Festus Mbisiogu, Chairperson of Blue Diamond Group, and Diana Chen, Chairperson of CIG Motors.
The apex bank said feedback from participants would inform its ongoing discussions with financial institutions and regulatory authorities, particularly in areas where greater cooperation could improve financial services and investment flows.
The Beijing roundtable is part of the CBN’s broader engagement with Asian financial markets as it seeks to strengthen Nigeria’s financial relationships with key international partners.
As part of the programme, the Nigerian delegation is also holding discussions with the People’s Bank of China and the leadership of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC).
The engagements are expected to provide further opportunities to explore cooperation between financial institutions in both countries and address challenges affecting cross-border transactions.
From Beijing, the CBN is expected to extend its outreach to Guangzhou, where it plans to meet Nigerian businesses to discuss their financial needs, remittance channels and possible measures to make investment in Nigeria easier.
The discussions are expected to help the apex bank identify practical solutions to the financial challenges facing businesses and strengthen the channels through which money moves between Nigeria and China.
