Presidency: Igbos never agreed single four-year term with Peter Obi – Umahi

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, says the South-East did not agree to a four-year presidential term for the region, challenging Peter Obi to consult political stakeholders before making such commitments.

Umahi made the remarks during an interview with Arise Television aired on Friday, arguing that decisions concerning the South-East’s presidential ambition should involve leaders across the region.

He said Obi, who is a presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, should have consulted him and other stakeholders, given the implications for Ebonyi State and the entire South-East.

Umahi questioned why the region should settle for a single four-year term while other regions could have eight years, adding that discussions were needed on whether to pursue the presidency immediately or support another region in the interest of future political alliances.

The minister also called for equitable consideration of all South-East states if the presidency is to be zoned to the region.

He argued that states such as Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo and Abia should also have the opportunity to produce a president, noting that former President Nnamdi Azikiwe was from Anambra State.
