Struggling Red Devils squeeze into the next FA Cup round with narrow win

Manchester United won for only the second time in seven games, defeating Wigan Athletic 2-0 at the DW Stadium to keep their FA Cup hopes alive.

Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes scored goals in either half to clinch the victory for Ten Hag’s side in a dominant showing over their League One hosts.

The Red Devils’ chances improve dramatically given that they will face Newport County or non-league Eastleigh in the fourth round.

Wigan dominated the first five minutes of the encounter, with Thelo Aasgaard forcing an early save from André Onana.

Manchester United were buoyed by that and went on to create chances which were missed until the 22nd minute when Diogo Dalot finished nicely from the edge of the box.

Chances continued to pile up for Manchester United who lacked a finishing touch when it mattered the most with Rasmus Hojlund even hitting the woodwork at some point.

The second half progressed in a similar fashion of dominance for the visitors but they would have to wait till the 74th minute when Bruno Fernandes was brought down in the penalty area by Liam Shaw and then converted the spot kick.
