Seven Devotees Killed in Stampede-Like Incident at Bihar Temple
At least seven devotees have died and more than a dozen others were injured after a stampede-like incident at the Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai, Bihar, on Monday, August 17, 2026, as thousands of worshippers gathered for prayers during the holy Hindu month of Shravan.
The incident occurred during the third Monday of Shravan, a period that traditionally draws large crowds to temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Officials said panic erupted after an electricity pole reportedly fell amid the densely packed crowd, with reports of possible electrocution triggering a sudden rush. Authorities have cautioned that the exact cause of the incident remains under investigation.
Several of the victims were women, according to local reports. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, while emergency and administrative officials were deployed to manage the aftermath and assist those affected.
Reports from Indian media indicate that the huge turnout was further intensified by the arrival of trains carrying devotees to the area. The sudden surge in numbers reportedly placed additional pressure on crowd-control arrangements and barricades around the temple.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over crowd management and safety at India’s major religious gatherings, where enormous numbers of worshippers regularly converge within confined spaces.
Authorities have launched an investigation to establish precisely what triggered the deadly rush and whether failures in crowd-control or safety measures contributed to the loss of lives.
