Sabinus Recalls Father’s Strong Opposition to His Comedy Career

Popular comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known as Sabinus, has revealed that his father strongly disapproved of his decision to venture into comedy, insisting he pursue a legal career instead.

Speaking during an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his father wanted him to become a lawyer. However, after several attempts, he was unable to secure admission to study law and eventually enrolled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt.

He said it was during his time on campus that he discovered his gift for comedy and began experimenting with skit-making, even though it initially brought no financial reward.

According to the content creator, he kept his comedy journey hidden from his father while in school. It was only a year after graduating that his father discovered the truth when he began seeing Sabinus featured on event posters.

“At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today. He wanted me to be a lawyer,” Sabinus said.

“It was on campus that I saw skit making and decided to try it out. Money wasn’t coming. After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it.”

He added that his father was shocked and furious when his sisters confirmed he had fully embraced comedy.

“He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”

Despite the initial resistance, Sabinus has since become one of Nigeria’s most successful comedians and skit makers, earning national recognition and a loyal fan base.
