Power Ministry Attributes Electricity Disruptions to Gas Shortage, Maintenance Issues

The Federal Ministry of Power has attributed the recent disruptions in electricity supply across parts of the country to maintenance and operational challenges within the power sector, as well as inadequate gas supply to thermal power stations and reduced hydroelectric generation.
The Ministry specifically identified Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo States as areas experiencing reduced electricity supply in recent days, despite recording noticeable improvements in power availability before the latest disruptions.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Adeola Adelabu on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Ministry acknowledged the inconvenience caused to households, businesses and public institutions, assuring Nigerians that efforts were underway to restore normal electricity supply.
It explained that preliminary assessments showed that the disruptions were not caused by any major or systemic failure of the national grid but were linked to maintenance and operational issues in parts of the electricity value chain.
According to the Ministry, the decline in power generation was also caused by gas supply constraints affecting thermal power plants and reduced output from hydroelectric stations due to lower water inflows into reservoirs.
It said the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, was working closely with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and Distribution Companies (DisCos) to address the challenges and ensure swift restoration of electricity supply.
The Ministry added that the Minister had engaged relevant operators to resolve the operational constraints responsible for the disruptions, accelerate ongoing maintenance activities and ensure regular communication with the public.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to improving electricity supply nationwide, the Ministry said it would sustain the progress already recorded in the sector and work towards delivering more reliable and quality power to Nigerians.
It appealed for public patience and understanding, assuring that further updates would be provided as efforts to restore normal supply progress.
