Nigeria international Paul Onuachu has officially completed a permanent transfer from Southampton FC to Turkish Super Lig giants Trabzonspor, following a standout loan spell that reignited his career.
The 31-year-old striker, who joined the Saints in January 2023, struggled to make an impact in England, managing just four goals in 40 appearances. All his goals for Southampton came during a difficult 2022–23 campaign that saw the club relegated from the Premier League with a record-low 12 points.
However, Onuachu found his form again in Turkey. During the 2023–24 season, while on loan at Trabzonspor, he netted 15 goals in just 21 appearances — a prolific return that not only boosted his reputation across Europe but also made him a fan favorite in Trabzon. The Turkish side wasted no time securing his services permanently.
Southampton confirmed the deal in a brief statement: “We thank Paul for his efforts during his time as a Saints player and wish him well.” While some outlets have echoed this sentiment with passing headlines, few have spotlighted the striker’s remarkable resurgence in Turkey or the renewed belief in his potential.
On the international stage, Onuachu made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2019 and has since earned 24 caps, scoring three times. He was part of the Nigerian squad that finished as runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations — a campaign that reinforced his value to the national team setup.
In contrast to his quiet spell in England, Onuachu’s revival at Trabzonspor illustrates how the right environment can reignite a player’s confidence and output.
As the Turkish league continues to attract talent from top European sides, his move underscores a broader trend of elite African players reshaping their careers outside the traditional power leagues — a story that deserves more coverage than it’s receiving.
With a permanent home at a club where he is clearly thriving, Paul Onuachu now has the opportunity to build on his momentum and further solidify his place among Nigeria’s top forwards.
