INEC Targets 100m+ Voters Ahead Of 2027 Polls

With Nigeria’s voter population expected to cross the 100 million mark before the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is strengthening its voter education and communication strategy.

The Commission says the projected increase from the current 93 million registered voters requires more effective public engagement to boost participation and confidence in the electoral process.

National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this at a joint implementation meeting of INEC’s voter education, publicity, gender and inclusivity departments.

Haruna called for simple and clear communication, stressing that electoral officials must be conversant with the Constitution, electoral laws and relevant INEC guidelines. The meeting, attended by voter education officials from the 36 states and the FCT, focused on a coordinated roadmap for voter mobilisation and inclusive participation.

INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, identified misinformation and disinformation as major threats ahead of the elections. He said the Commission would intensify factual and continuous public engagement to explain electoral processes and technologies, including BVAS and the IReV platform.

Oketola also reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to improving access to the electoral process for persons with disabilities, women, youths and elderly voters.
