WAEC appoints Amos Dangut as registrar for five-year tenure

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut as its new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer for a five-year tenure running from October 2026 to September 2031.

Dangut, who is from Nigeria, succeeds Pateh Bah of The Gambia and becomes the 14th Registrar to the Council.

His appointment was ratified by the WAEC Council, the organisation’s international governing board, at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

Dangut formally assumed office on October 1, 2026, after serving as Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria since October 2, 2023.

Born on October 2, 1967, the new registrar holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

He began his career in education in 1994 at St Louis College, Jos, where he also worked as a WAEC examiner. Four years later, he joined the examination council as a full-time staff member.

Since joining WAEC, Dangut has held several positions across its test development, examination security, branch and zonal operations.

He served as Assistant Registrar and Subject Officer in the Test Development Division at the council’s Ogba office in Lagos from July 1998 to January 2005.

He subsequently became Senior Assistant Registrar and Head of Examinations Security, as well as Deputy Branch Controller, at the Uyo Branch Office from January 2005 to January 2008.

He held similar responsibilities at the Bauchi Branch Office between January 2008 and December 2011 before becoming Branch Controller at the Yola office, a position he occupied until January 2019.

Dangut later served as Deputy Registrar and Controller of the Post Examinations Department from January 2019 to October 2020, before becoming Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator at the Ikeja Zonal Office.

He was subsequently posted to the Head of National Office’s office in August 2023 and became Head of the WAEC National Office in Nigeria two months later.

Dangut’s role in examination reforms

WAEC described Dangut as an experienced test developer and administrator with more than two decades of experience in the use of technology to improve examination processes.

During his time as Head of National Office, he led several initiatives aimed at improving examination delivery, security and efficiency.

Among the reforms introduced during his tenure were the rollout of computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examination, serialisation of question papers and the Digital Electronic Marking System.

He also supervised the development and implementation of the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform and Digital Records Archive.

Other systems introduced or strengthened under his leadership included digital tools for examination logistics, timetable management and monitoring examiners’ attendance.

The council said Dangut’s record of service has been marked by integrity, transparency and diligence.

His work on examination matters between 2000 and 2006 earned him a commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee.

He also received an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government and Akoko South Local Government during his National Youth Service Corps programme.

Served on education boards

As Head of the National Office, Dangut represented WAEC on the governing boards of several education-related institutions.

These included the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and the Grange Educational Foundation.

He also represented the council at education policy platforms, including the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

Dangut is a scholar with publications in both national and international journals and has presented papers at several conferences and professional forums.

He currently serves as the Regional Representative for the West African sub-region on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

He is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management.

Outside his professional commitments, Dangut is said to enjoy swimming, tennis, farming and spending time with his wife and children.
