Overnight Drone Barrage Kills Three in Western Russia as Cross-Border Strikes Intensify

Ukrainian drone strikes deep inside western Russia overnight killed three civilians and injured two others, according to multiple regional governors.

The attacks, which Russia’s Defence Ministry described as part of a “massive” nine-hour air assault, also targeted industrial facilities and residential areas.

Penza Region – Governor Oleg Melnichenko reported that a woman was killed and two others wounded after a drone struck a local enterprise.

Samara Region – Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said an elderly man died when his home caught fire from falling drone debris.

Rostov Region – Acting Governor Yuri Sliusar confirmed that a security guard at an industrial site was killed when a blaze broke out after a drone impact. Sliusar added that air defences intercepted drones over seven districts during the night.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said 112 Ukrainian drones were intercepted or destroyed over Russian territory between Friday night and Saturday morning — including 34 over the Rostov region alone — in what it called one of the largest cross-border drone raids of the war.

In Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, Governor Sergiy Lysak said Russian drone strikes injured three civilians and damaged multiple homes, cars, and commercial buildings.

While Russian state media claim that Moscow’s forces recently seized two villages in the area — part of accelerated territorial gains in July — Kyiv denies any Russian presence there, echoing battlefield disputes frequently reported since the war began.

President Vladimir Putin, speaking Friday, repeated that he “wants peace” but that Russia’s demands for ending the conflict remain unchanged — a stance that has led him to reject repeated international calls for a ceasefire during the more than three-year war.
