Qatar Condemns Houthi Strikes, Calls for Protection of Civilians
Qatar has condemned recent Houthi attacks on two major Saudi airports, describing the strikes as a serious violation of Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and a threat to regional security and civilian safety.
In a statement, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the attacks on Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The ministry said the strikes posed a direct threat to civilians, civilian infrastructure and the safety of air navigation, warning that attacks on vital aviation facilities could further escalate tensions across the region.
Saudi authorities say the attacks resulted in at least three deaths and 36 injuries across the two airports.
The incidents have also raised fresh concerns over the security of critical transport infrastructure as tensions involving Yemen’s Houthi movement continue to reverberate beyond the country’s borders.
Qatar reaffirmed its support for Saudi Arabia and stressed the need to protect civilian facilities and maintain the safety of international air traffic amid the growing regional tensions.
The latest attacks come against the backdrop of years of conflict between the Houthis and a Saudi-led coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015. While cross-border attacks declined significantly following a 2022 truce, sporadic missile and drone launches have continued to fuel security concerns in the Gulf.
The incidents are likely to add pressure on regional actors to prevent further escalation and safeguard civilian infrastructure from becoming a target in the wider conflict.
