Fidson joins global manufacturers to boost access to flu drug

Nigerian pharmaceutical company, Fidson Healthcare Plc, has been selected by the Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) as one of 11 manufacturers to develop and produce generic versions of baloxavir marboxil, an antiviral used to treat influenza.

The selection was made under a voluntary licensing agreement between MPP and Roche, aimed at expanding manufacturing capacity and strengthening global preparedness for future influenza outbreaks and pandemics.

Under the agreement, selected manufacturers will be able to supply generic baloxavir in 129 countries, covering most low- and middle-income countries, subject to regulatory approval.

Fidson was selected following an open application process in which manufacturers were assessed on their technical and regulatory capabilities and commitment to producing quality-assured medicines.

Fidson CEO, Biola Adebayo, said the partnership reflects the growing role of African pharmaceutical manufacturers in global health and will help improve access to essential antiviral medicines.
